The Mongar district is the northern portion of the ancient region of Kheng. East of Mongar is separated from Ura by Thrumshing la pass and seven hours drive. The journey is one of the most beautiful in all the Himalayas.

Arriving in Mongar marks the beginning of your eastern Bhutan experience. Most towns in the west of Bhutan are in valleys. Like many other towns in Eastern Bhutan, Mongar is situated on the top of a hill. A row of eucalyptus trees protects the town from the wind. There is not much of real interests to see in Mongar. However many travellers spend a night in Mongar before continuing their journey to Trashigang.
Some of the finest weaving villages in Bhutan are found in the Mongar area.

Mongar Dzong was rebuilt in 1953 on the orders of the third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. It is unusual as it has two entrances. Mongar Dzong is two storeys high with the central tower in the centre of the courtyard.
