Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, lies in a wooded valley, sprawling up a hillside on the west bank of the Wang Chhu. Thimphu was made capital in 1961 nevertheless it remained very rural until 1970s. But since 1990, the population has grown dramatically and now it is estimated to be 46,000.

Trashi Yangtse is a small town, rich in Bhutanese art. Trashi Yangtse borders the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Chorten Kora is a two huge stupas which has Nepalese ‘eye’ style. Trashi Yangtse is very popular for its excellent wooden cups and bowls made from avocado and maple wood. Trashi Yangtse is also famous for paper making.

Trashigang is a high town in the eastern part of Bhutan which is a good base for traveling to other places of eastern Bhutan and also the country’s largest district. Trashigang is the main market place for the semi-nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng whose unique way of dressing is popular in Bhutan.

Trongsa, perched on steep slopes above Mangde River gorge, is of great importance in the history of Bhutan. This town forms the central hub of the nation and is the place from where attempts at unifying the country were launched in former times. The landscape around Tongsa is spectacular and its impressive dzong, stretched along a ridge above a ravine, first comes into view about an hour before the winding, mountain road leads you into the town itself. Chendebji Chorten, Tongsa Dzong, Ta Dzong are some of the interesting places of Trongsa.
