Gasa lies in the extreme northwest of the Bhutan. It is bordered by Punakha dzonkghag in the southeast, Thimphu in the southwest, Wangdue in the east and the Tibetan region of China on the extreme north. The only way o get to the Gasa village is on foot. A road has been made from Punakha to the southern border of the district at Tashithang, but it is not completed yet. The people of Gasa generally speak Dzongkha with a distinctive accent. The Laya- Gasa trek and Gasa Hot Spring treks pass through this region.
The Trashi Thongmoen Dzong (originally called Drukgyel Dzong) in Gasa lies on the old trade route to Tibet. Nowadays it serves as the dzongkhag administrative headquarters, after being renovated.
