Clausthal-Zellerfeld trekking information

Clausthal-Zellerfeld is the largest town in Lower Saxony, which is situated in the mountains rather than on the edge, Germany. It is located in the southwestern part of the Harz mountains. It is the seat of the Samtgemeinde Oberharz.

Clausthal and Zellerfeld were merged in 1924 to form an administrative unit. Clausthal is well known for the old Clausthal University of Technology and the magnificent buildings and Zellerfeld is a typical tourist resort for hikers and winter sportsmen.

The main tourist attractions of Clausthal-Zellerfeld are

1). Oberharzer Wasserregal (Upper Harz Water Management) - It is preserved from ancient times and it is also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The “Roeder-Stollen-System” with its 4 underground water wheel chambers and two original water wheels of 1805 as well as the “Rathstiefsten Stollen”, a water drainage cannel from 1150 if of eminent importance to monument conservation.
