The Italian province of L'Aquila includes the highest mountains of the Apennines, Corno Grande (the highest peak), the high plain of Campo Imperatore, and Europe's southernmost glacier, the Calderone. L'Aquila is the largest, least densely populated and most mountainous province of the Abruzzo region. L'Aquila borders the provinces of Chieti and Pescara to the east, Teramo to the north, Isernia to the south and Rome, Frosinone and Rieti (Lazio) to the west. The capital is the city of L'Aquila, which was struck by a devastating earthquake in April, 2009.
