Ranighat near TansenTansen is an attractive, ancient and romantic medieval hill town which is on the way from Pokhara to Lumbini. It is situated at the height of 14,000 feet above the sea level. Tansen is popular for its cultural heritage and traditions. On a clear weather day, you can see Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu, Gauri Shankar and few other peaks from Tansen. Tansen is a home of Newari and Magar who are known for their warrior skills in the history of Tansen. They became more famous during the Anglo-Nepal war of the early 1800s, when their army emerged victorious despite being outnumbered four to one. Until the rise of Shah, Tansen was one of the most powerful Kingdoms of Nepal.

Tansen is also a most important town of the trading posts recognized by the Newars in Nepal’s middle Hills. It remains a main bazaar town, with people coming in to buy cooking oil, salt, tea, cloth and other provisions, and to enjoy the teashops and sociability. Dhaka cloth which is used for topis and shawls and metal working is still important local industries.

Places to visit at Tansen are :

Tansen Durbar or Tansen Palace - It is a 64 room palace which is a fine example of arts and crafts of the ancient city.

Sitalpati – It is a Public square which is just outside the Tansen Durbar. It was used for the functions at the time of Shah regime.

Bhagwati Temple- It was built in 1815 to commemorate the Nepali victory over the British at Butwal. Until now, Bhagwati Temple has been renovated twice. It is also the most popular temple in town.

Ranighat Palace - It was built in 19th century by Governor Khadka Shamser in memory of his wife Tej Kumari.

Tansen Bazaar – It is the must visit place in Tansen. You can also have a look at Rana’s dynasty building and houses which has a beautifully carved windows from that time. Bowl-shaped Madi Valley , Srinagar Danda – For spectacular view and an ideal picnic spot.

Amar Narayan Temple – It is one of the most beautiful temple outside the Kathmandu Valley. It was built in 1807. It is three-tiered pagoda style temple.

Tansen is untouched by modernity, pollution and the urban bustle and it is the perfect answer for those who like to visit the Nepal and its culture, architect and nature.
