Namche Bazaar (or Namche Bazar) is located at 3,440 metres and is a village in the Khumbu region. It is the main trading center of the area. The village has many shops and lodges (most of them with a blue roof) where you can find almost anything required for trekking. There is also very high speed internet (via satellite). Of course everything is much more expensive than in Kathmandu. Almost everyone trekking in the Khumbu region will visit Namche Bazaar, as it is the gateway to the high Himalayas. Most trekkers will stay in Namche for a few days for acclimatisation. Many trekkers get up before sunrise and walk up to the Sagarmatha National Park Headquarters to take in the impressive views of Mount Everest. On Saturday mornings, a weekly market is held in the center of the village. People from all around the Namche area come to sell their wares, to locals and to visitors alike. There are quite a few places where you can have a decent meal, also Western food. Namche also has a German Bakery.
There is also a nice and small monastery which you can pay a visit. You can do some practice for walking, as it is a beautiful location for some short walks. This is to be advised concerning the acclimatisation.
Namche Bazaar can be reached by helicopter using the Shyangboche Airstrip that is located on a hill overlooking the village. You will pass it when you continue your trek to Gokyo. Namche is getting bigger and bigger, because they are building a lot of houses, mostly lodges.
