Mustang is the name of the entire district along the Kali Gandaki from Tibetan border south to Ghasa. It's headquarter is in Jomsom. Mustang has a long, rich and complex history that makes it one of the most interesting and pictursque places in Nepal. Mustang has been described as a thumb-like part of Nepal extending into Tibet. People of Upper Mustang call themselves Lobas. They build houses and temples with rammed earth or sun-baked bricks of mud on a stone foundation. The people out here herd yaks, raise goats and sheep. The main food for themselves comes from farming but most families tend fields of buckwheat, barley, wheat and mustard. People at Mustang follows Sakya religion.
Trek to Mustang region is a rare privilege. The Upper Mustang region was opened for the trekkers from October 1991. Trek to Upper Mustang is same as a trek to Tibet.
