Palencia

Palencia is a province in the region Castilla-Leon. The city of Palencia is the capital that can act as a starting point for the well-known Romanesque route of Palencia, an itinerary across rich medieval heritage around the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela. An outstanding building among this route is the monastery of Santa María, in Aguilar de Campoo.

In the town of Carrión de los Condes you will find the beautiful convent of Santa Clara (13th century) and the churches of Santa María del Camino and Santiago. A stay in the province of Palencia also provides the opportunity to enjoy the Picos de Europa mountains. Among the best dishes of this region are lechazo asado (roast lamb) and pichón estofado (stewed pigeon). The vegetables and garden produce of the fertile fields are use to make tasty vegetable stews. Other specialities of the region are pork products Saldaña beans and sheep's cheese.
