Cartagena was founded about 227 B.C. by Carthaginian general Hasdrubal. When it was taken by the Roman general Scipio Africanus Major in 209 BC it was renamed as Carthago Nova, Latin for "New Carthage". At the time Carthago Nova was said to be one of the richest cities in the world. The city gave its name (without the 'new') to the newest province in the Hispaniae diocese, in the form of an adjective: Carthaginiensis. Cartagena is a Port of Cultures and offers numerous archaeological sites: construction of a Roman household as House of Fortune. With fresh murals recovered, a civic as the Calzada and Roman Baths in the Decumano and religious character as the Augusteum, the seat of worship of the emperor Augustus, the Interpretation Center of the Punic Wall (third century BC), Construction defensive Punic found only in Spain; Castle Conception of the thirteenth century, in the Tower of Homage hosts the Interpretation Center of the History of the City at which the lift-bridge allows easy climb, although the most important all of them is the Roman Theatre, jewel monumental century BC which together with the remains of the Old Cathedral will be integrated with the museum's theater in a single visitor center. Cingular is the Refuge-Museum of the Spanish Civil War, for the recovery of this space for visits. Different views of the city can be seen from the Bus and from the Tourist Boat also known port activity. Municipal Archaeological Museum, National Maritime Archaeology, Naval and Military and devoted to Carmen Conde. Special mention of the military heritage reflected in the various sections of the wall and into the castles and batteries coast of the hills and around the bay.
Nowadays it's a typical city of South Spain, with a lot of night and street life and several typical quarters unspoilt by tourism.
