Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentina province of Tierra del Fuego which is located in a wide bay on the southern coast of the island of Tierra del Fuego. Ushuaia is beautifully located on the shores of the Beagle Channel and surrounded by Magellanic subpolar forests on the hills around the town. Ushuaia claims to be the “Southernmost city in the world” and the gateway to Antartica.
It is a small city with a population of roughly 60.000 people. Besides for its beautiful location is it an interesting place to visit as there are many interesting things to do and see in Ushuaia and its surroundings:
Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego - an excellent place for several day hikes or short treks. In the park you'll have beautiful panoramic views of the Beagle Channel, the Canadon Negro and other mountains. You'll find lakes, glaciers and a diverse flora and fauna, with amongst many other the famous condor.
Martial glacier - only 7 kilometer from the city centre. In winter time you'll be able to ski, in summer time you can make beautiful day hikes.
Tren del Fin del Mundo - the southernmost railway in the world, originally built as a freight line to serve the prison of Ushuaia.
Boating on the Beagle Channel - there are different kind of boat trips of 4, 6 and 9 hour to islands like Isla de los Lobos en Isla de Los Pajaros, where you'll find sea lions, pinguins and many types of birds.
Estancias or ranches - there are several ranches near Ushuaia, amongst them Estancia Harberton, which is beautifully located.
There is plenty of accommodation in Ushuaia, although around Christmas time and New Year it can be very busy and transportation to and from the city can be difficult to arrange because of capacity problems.
