Situated west of Bolivia and Argentina and south of Peru Chile fills a narrow (4,506 km) strip between the Andes and the Pacific. 1/3 of Chile is covered by the towering ranges of the Andes. In the north is the driest place on Earth, the Atacama Desert, and in the center is a 1,127 km thickly populated valley with most of Chile's arable land. At the southern point of Chile's mainland is Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in the world, and beyond that lies the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego, an island divided between Chile and Argentina. In Patagonia, the wild, almost unhabited region at the southern cone of South America, there are numerous national parks and first-class trekking areas. Unfortunately these areas have only a short trekking season (December to February) because of the harsh climate. All in the south you will find the top trekking destination; the most visited Chilean national park Torres del Paine. Besides Patagonia there are more beautiful regions where you can do a trekking, like the Altiplano, Lake District and Central Chile.
