Wangdue Phodrang is a small town on the highway from Thimpu to Trongsa and Bumthang and is well known for its fine bamboo work and stone carvings. The higher reaches of the Wangdue Phodrang valley provide rich pastureland for cattle. The lingering sound of the wind produced by the deep gorge of the river gives an ideal background for the beautiful, almost unnaturally created scenic beauty. It is at an altitude of 1800m and is 21 km from Punakha, the old capital of Bhutan.

Wangdue Phodrang Dzong: Stretched along the hilltop above the meeting of the Punakha Chu and Tang Chu rivers, the imposing Wangdue Phodrang Dzong is the town’s main attraction. The dzong is open for visitors during Wangdue Phodrang Tsechu, celebrated in autumn.
