Parco Gran Sasso d'Italia offers a number of itineraries and visits for every season thanks to the richness of its massifs and thanks to the historical-architectonical traces man left in the past. The Park is made up of three mountain groups: the chain of Gran Sasso d'Italia, the massif of Laga and the Monti Gemelli. The Park is also characterized by the presence of the highest peak of the Apennines, the Corno Grande (2912 meters). Gran Sasso or great stone forms the centerpiece of the Parco Nazionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga which was established in 1993 and holds the highest mountains in continental Italy south of Alps and is part of the Apennines, the mountain range that runs the entire length of the Italian peninsula. L'Aquila is the nearest city to the Gran Sasso, just 16 km from Assergi, the small town at the base of the mountain.
